Double Chin (Kybella Injections) Q & A

What is Kybella?

Kybella is a novel treatment for fatty deposits under the chin – so-called “double chin” - that uses injections of a material called deoxycholic acid to target fat cells and destroy them, helping to recontour the chin in people with moderate to severe double chins. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally-occurring substance made by the body. When injected into the chin, it works by breaking down fat so the body's natural waste system can remove it over time. Kybella is the first injectable of its kind to receive FDA approval for the treatment of fatty deposits in the chin, and it can be a great alternative to the much more invasive liposuction procedures traditionally used to treat chin fat.

Can Kybella be used elsewhere in the body?

No, Kybella is only approved by the FDA for use in the submental chin fat – the stubborn pockets of fat under the chin. The injections are not meant to remove large fat deposits, like those in the belly or thighs.

What is the Kybella procedure like?

First, your chin will be carefully evaluated to ensure you're an ideal candidate for Kybella and to determine where to place the solution for the best possible results. Needle placement is critical to ensure only the fat is treated, and to avoid potential side effects that can occur when the solution is injected in the wrong areas. During treatment, the Kybella solution will be injected in multiple spots in your chin using a very fine needle. The number of injections you'll need during your treatment session will depend on how much fat needs to be removed. While some patients achieve the effect they want after a single session, some patients will need up to six treatment sessions to get the best effects. Each treatment session takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
