Laser Hair Removal Q & A

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal is based on a process called photothermolysis, which uses the intense focused energy from lasers to destroy hair follicles and prevent the regrowth of hair.

What is the laser hair removal procedure like?

Prior to treatment, your hair will be trimmed just above the skin surface and the laser will be adjusted to accommodate the thickness and color of your hair, as well as your skin type and the location of the hair. A cooling gel will be used to protect your skin and keep you comfortable during the procedure. Before undergoing the entire treatment, a test area may be treated first to make sure the settings are correct for your needs. Once it's determined the settings are correct, the treatment proceeds fairly quickly. Once completed, you may be given a cool cloth or an ice pack to help ease any stinging or warmth you may feel. Some patients report a mild itching sensation or minor swelling or redness, all of which typically resolve within a few days following the procedure.

What should I do to prepare for laser hair removal?

To get the best results, do not pluck or wax hair or undergo electrolysis for at least six weeks prior to your procedure. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun for six weeks prior to treatment and for six weeks afterward as your skin heals.

How many treatments might I need?

Since hair growth is cyclical, multiple treatments are needed to capture each hair during its active growth phase. The number of treatments you'll need can vary; Dr. Matt can help determine the probably number you'll need during your consultation. Most men and women find they achieve the best results with four to six treatments, each about four to six weeks apart.
